Make the most of your sonar! – The Ultimate Fish Finder Guide

The more choice you have, the harder it is to choose – with the purchase of a fish finder.

We know that a depth finder is a pricy piece of fishing equipment. Often it’s the most expensive equipment next to the boat. That’s why good advice is often only expensive to come by. The names of the latest features always sound fancy, but who actually has a good grasp of their functionality? Isn’t it a lot more essential to know what these features do and how they can help us to locate small and large fish?

At some point, in your effort to find the right depth finder, you’ll stumble across buy recommendations and dealers. Now at the latest, you need to be informed—knowledge can save you money. You yourself want to spend as little as possible. The other party, on the other hand, wishes to turn a profit. Plus, don’t assume that the other party is an expert on fish finders either. It is not uncommon for the seller not to be an angler himself. He might be able to summarise the technical features but could be lacking in practical experience.

Unfortunately, you will only be able to assess the seller’s know-how with experience. In the worst case, you purchase and install the wrong sonar. At this point, an exchange is nearly impossible. It matters not whether the fish finder was your purchase or a gift. Too late is too late.

With this book, we help you to bridge the information gap—and that in a short time. With the knowledge contained in this book, you will not only be equal to the seller, but you might even outsmart one or the other. “The Great Fish Finder Guide” not only saves money but also increases the likelihood that you’ll be happy with your purchase and able to use it to its full potential while fishing.

The fish finder in practice

Only little material is available on how to fish successfully with fish finders. All too often, people still believe that connecting a sonar will automatically lead to more large pike, zander, or the large shoals of perch—like magic, you will become a better angler with the investment paying off in no time.

Unfortunately, the reality is quite different. Some anglers get excited when spotting a fish crescent and immediately cast their line. These anglers often miss the fish without noticing it. Others rarely spot fish crescents. The reason is simple: the settings are wrong.

To increase your fishing success, you don’t need more effort. You just have to know how to interpret the images on the fish finder. You have to be aware that a depth finder maps out the underwater world for us—it transforms sounds (echoes) into an image. So we have to learn how to read sounds. Then it’s easy to:

  • interpret fish arcs correctly.
  • estimate the size of the fish.
  • judge whether you are in a good or bad spot.
  • choose the right settings to find the best hotspots.
  • precisely navigate to these hotspots — being one foot off might make the difference.

It’s impossible to operate a fish finder successfully without the appropriate knowledge. Those who are knowledgeable do not get lost in the settings of their depth finders and do not waste valuable fishing time.

Your benefits at a glance

The agony of choice – Before the purchase

We summarize the most important fish finder features. We answer which frequency does what which is right for you. We elaborate on the tremendous value of CHIRP—after reading the guide, you will know why it pays to consider this feature. Last but not least, you will be able to assess whether an advertised fish finder can deliver on the dealer’s promises.

As a result, you won’t surf the net for hours and will be able to quickly determine which depth finder suits you best.

Operating a fish finder

We will show you how to use your sonar or fish finder most effectively. You’ll learn how to correctly interpret the output—a fish arc is not always a fish arc.

Underwater elevations are amazing hotspots for fish. We’ll explain why most anglers think they’re fishing directly above the underwater elevation while in reality, they are meters away from pike and zander. As a result, the box remains empty.

Chapter 4 – How 2D Sonar works (63 pages)

With the right settings, you will find the fish, too.

Have you ever wondered which of the seemingly thousands of echo sounder settings are actually important? We discuss the most important settings in detail and explain how to use them to search for fish and hotspots. We dedicate over eight pages to the most powerful setting: the scroll speed. We also cover the zoom function, how to use the sensitivity to find the thermocline and the large predators, and much more.

As a result, you will have more time to fish effectively.

  1. Jens

    Great and helpful book!

I have finally found a book which actually explains the how, when and what to understanding fish finders. This book explains in some detail the workings of sonar which is very helpful in understanding the advancing technology of down scan, side scan and side view. This author explains the differences between several different manufacturers of fish finders. This helps make the information more credible and not just trying to sell a particular unit. I have been able to go into my unit and adjust my fish finder so it is actually indicating where the fish are….or not. I recommend this reading very highly if you ant to truly utilize your particular fish finder to its fullest potential.
